A History of the University of Oregon:
The Founding 1857-1883
Video Documentary
Available November 2001
Produced by the the Oregon Humanities Center
in collaboration with Knight Library Media Services.
In 1872, on the eve of a nationwide depression, the people in the tiny community of Eugene City decided to build a university for the State of Oregon. They thought a university would be good for the future of their children and for the future of the town -- bringing both economic and social development to the community. In October 1876, the State of Oregon opened the doors of its new university, without fanfare and without an adequate budget to run it.
